Why to Buy an Electric Car 101

The electric car is coming.

Unlike most things in these days of economic turmoil, you can take that to the bank. But while many automakers have made some sort of commitment to offer some form of electric car, the major question is: Will we buy it?

Well, the promotion has begun. And here are 10 reasons why many pundits say that, Yes, we will be buying electric cars.

1. There is no engine. Think about the savings in gas and maintenance. And there are four electric motors that run the electric car so if one motor goes out, you still have the other three churning along. The now available space can be used by batteries that provide the vehicle with the longer range we all want. There is a new mini vehicle hybrid electric vehicle that has been said to have a range of 900 miles. Wow!

2. Electric cars will be reliable. There is no doubt about that. And there is evidence of that already. There is an electric car that runs on solar power that has driven around the world. Double Wow!

3. The electric car can actually save you money in the long run. They may be more expensive to buy initially, but you will no doubt save on the maintenance and fuel costs.

4. Solar roofs that can be used to provide energy to run the vehicles will provide free power from the sun. Solar panels have already been developed to achieve this and a Prius has been modified to include a solar roof which has been proven to extend its range and make driving even cheaper.

5. They are quiet. Walking on the streets of a large city could be almost a pleasure because it will be so quiet once the old gas engine cars make their way to the junkyard.

6. Samples like the Tesla Roadster already exist which show the benefits: 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds; doesn’t burn oil; travels 244 miles per charge; costs pennies per mile.

7. No infrastructure. The cars can be filled up so to speak by just plugging them into an electrical socket.

8. Besides being able to put solar panels on the roof of the vehicle, transparent solar panels have already been invented that can be put on the windshield providing more capability to turn sun light into energy and thus more range.

9. Believe it or not, there are companies that are developing “Solar Paint” -- paint that can generate electricity. So with solar panels on the roof and windshield and solar energy also coming from the paint on the surface of the vehicle, there is no chance that the car will be without power. Wow! Wow! Wow!

10. Finally, it will end once and for all our dependence on foreign oil -- wait, it will eliminate our need for any oil.

2009 Nissan Murano pricing and specs

Nissan Australia has announced the official pricing and specifications for its second generation Murano SUV.

It boasts an evolutionary design over the original Murano launched five years ago, which Nissan claim spawned the cross over genre.

Local models will receive a more powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine which develops 191kW of power and 336Nm at 4400rpm.

On the combined cycle, the new Murano uses 10.9 litres of petrol per 100kms while producing 259 grams per 100kms of CO2.

“The basic engine architecture hasn’t changed, but attention to fine detail has helped develop an engine that not only delivers more power, but does so using less fuel and producing fewer emissions.” says Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Managing Director and CEO, Dan Thompson.

The engine is mated to a revised six-speed Xtronic CVT gearbox which has been optimised for quicker and more intuitive shifts.

Power is transferred to the ground through an intelligent all mode four-wheel-drive system with electronic 4WD selection and lock mode, including Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Active Brake limited Slip and Traction Control System (TCS).

Standard features include push button start, double stitched leather seat trim, leather steering wheel and gear knob, dual zone climate control, cruise control, six-stacker stereo system with MP3 auxiliary input and six speakers plus steering wheel audio controls.

The flagship Ti variant adds front heated seats, a BOSE audio system with 11 speakers including two subwoofers, satellite navigation, reverse parking camera and hands free Bluetooth phone system.

The new Nissan Murano arrives in Australia priced at $45,990 for the ST model and $55,890 for the Ti model.

Barack Obama, Your Limousine is Ready

The Presidential changing of the guard officially happens in one week, and when Barack Obama stakes the stand as Commander in Chief of the United States, General Motors will have its latest Cadillac Presidential Limousine waiting.

While GM was very shy to release the full specifications of the limo (for obvious reasons), it's clear that Obama's ride will be a mix of GM parts, notably the Escalade headlamps and DTS rear end, all riding on the platform shared with GM's heavy-duty pickups. Expect this special limo to be full of technological gadgetry suitable only for Citizen Number One.

General Motors has issued a full release which can be found by clicking through the post, and click through our gallery to see the Presidential limo from all angles.

An American Tradition Continues: New Presidential Era Begins With a New Cadillac Presidential Limousine

President Obama to Christen New Car at Jan. 20 Inaugural Parade

WASHINGTON – As Americans celebrate the inauguration of a new president of the United States next week, another new Cadillac will grace Pennsylvania Avenue to lead the proceedings. President Barack Obama will ride in an all-new Cadillac Presidential Limousine, continuing a long tradition of Cadillac limousines that have served many U.S. presidents.

"Cadillac is honored to again provide a new Presidential Limousine," said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. "This is a great American tradition that we're delighted to renew with an all-new car featuring the best of Cadillac's dramatic design and technology."

The image of an American president greeting crowds from a Cadillac limousine dates to President Woodrow Wilson and the early days of the automobile, and continues into a historic new era. The latest Cadillac Presidential Limousine is a completely new design, succeeding the DTS Presidential Limousine that debuted in 2004. The new car incorporates many of the dramatic design and technology features of new and highly acclaimed Cadillac vehicles in a purpose-built format tailored to specific and exacting specifications befitting presidential transport.

Inside and out, the Cadillac Presidential Limousine includes many of the brand's signature design elements. Assertive, modern and elegant, the front of the car includes the intricate, dual-textured grille made famous by Cadillac's most popular current models, the CTS sport sedan and Escalade. Vertical design elements, such as the car's front and rear lighting, mirror those used on production models.

For largely functional reasons, such as optimal outward visibility, the car is slightly more upright than its predecessor. However, this new Cadillac Presidential Limousine occupies roughly the same overall footprint on the road as the previous model, with a similar size and proportion.

The side and rear profiles of the new Presidential Limousine are classic, elegant forms, evocative of Cadillac's STS and DTS luxury sedans. Inside the cabin, the car includes the finest examples of Cadillac's recent renaissance in design, technology and craftsmanship. The cabin blends modern design and technology with old-world craftsmanship. Major aspects of the cabin are cut and sewn by hand, the same process used in popular Cadillac models such as the CTS sport sedan.

Naturally, many purpose-built aspects of the car are specially designed and prepared for presidential use. The rear passenger area includes an extensive executive compartment with ample seating space, outward visibility and useful mobile office features.

The car was designed, developed and tested by specialists who adhered to an extensive set of specifications. It was subjected to an extreme testing regimen to ensure performance that achieves precise functional requirements. In doing so, security provisions were undertaken at all times during development to ensure the car's functional capabilities are preserved and confidential.

An embroidered presidential seal is positioned in the center of the rear seat back panel, as well as on each rear door trim panel. Presidential seals are also affixed to the exterior rear doors. The U.S. flag is placed on the right front fender, and the presidential standard is located on the left front fender when the president travels in the vehicle. High-tech LED spotlights illuminate the flags at night.

History – Cadillac and the U.S. Presidency
Cadillac has built limousines and special vehicles for U.S. presidents, diplomats, ambassadors and foreign dignitaries since the early 20th century, an iconic aspect of the brand that continues today.

Cadillac's central role began during World War I, when many Cadillac engines and cars were transferred to military and government service because of their superior durability and power. One of the first chief executives to use a Cadillac was President Wilson, who rode through the streets of Boston during a World War I victory parade in 1919. A lavish 1928 Cadillac town car was used in the Calvin Coolidge administration.

In 1938, two Cadillac convertibles, dubbed the "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth," were delivered to the U.S. government. Named after the great ocean liners of the time, the vehicles were 21.5 feet long, weighed 7,660 pounds and were equipped with a full ammunition arsenal, two-way radios and heavy-duty generators. Durable and reliable, the two "Queens" served Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

President Eisenhower, known as a car buff, rode in one of the first Cadillac Eldorado models ever produced during his 1953 inaugural parade. The Eldorado represented a high point in automobile design history, as it had the first wraparound windshield, a feature quickly adopted on other new production models.

In 1956, the Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II convertibles replaced the original series. The vehicles were slightly smaller, but like their predecessors, were fully armored and featured state-of-the art communications. Moreover, the vehicles were fitted with narrow rims inside the tire in case the tires were shot out. The Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II served not only President Eisenhower, but also Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Both vehicles were retired in 1968.

The Ronald W. Reagan administration was delivered a 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine and a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham – Presidential Series was delivered to the William J. Clinton administration in 1993. Unlike previous models that typically were Cadillac cars adapted and modified by independent limousine companies, the 1993 Presidential Brougham was designed, developed and manufactured totally within General Motors and Cadillac. This included an extensive set of security measures to maintain confidentiality, a process that continues today.

Currently, the 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine resides at the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif., while the 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Ark.

Cadillac has produced two presidential limousines this decade that remain in service. The first was a Deville Presidential model delivered to President George W. Bush in 2001. In 2004, President Bush debuted a new DTS Presidential model. It was the first application of a new design that launched later that year for the production DTS full-size sedan.

Screaming Eagle: Armored car made to break through walls

The Screaming Eagle made by Jack Holt, is one powerful destructive car. Jack designed the body himself, using T1 steel for the lower half and 10 gauge steel for the upper half. Apart from the two seats, the car also has a 64-inch bunk bed and two hydraulic canopies. Power comes from a V8 sourced from a tugboat, mated to an eight-speed hydraulic transmission.

The car can withstand fire from light weapons, and can crack through brick walls, presumably without even breaking a sweat. This 18,000 pound vehicle took 3700 man-hours to complete, and can run at a top speed of 90mph, with fuel efficiency hovering between 10-15mpg (diesel).

Lotus Elise gets lighter with full carbon fiber body

The Elise itself is one light car for the ultimate fun of driving, and it probably only gets better as it gets lighter. Moving probably on the same theory, Jimmy Wong from Hong Kong gave his 2002 Lotus Elise an all-carbon fiber body. Going all carbon, inside and out, the car lost about 30-40 kg of its weight, in the six-month long process.

Along with the changes in the body, other changes like a KW Suspension, Lotus Racing Exhaust and a larger intake were also included. Though there hasn’t been a huge change in the available power, the change itself is commendable.

Nissan Brings Out the Second Generation Altima

Nissan brought out Altima, the hot selling car in 2001. The Japanese automaker introduced its second generation in 2006, toughening the sedan’s popularity. With an aim of broadening its overall appeal, Nissan introduced a hybrid version of the car in January. And the much-awaited coupe has at last arrived.

When compared with other coupes, the Altima is not just a two-door version of the sedan. The engineers from Nissan has shortened the wheelbase by 101 mm,
Cut the overall length by 185 mm and lowered the height by 66 mm, giving the coupe a handsome look that could turn heads.

The coupe has the only sheet metal shared between two- and four-door Altimas is the hood. It has been endowed with a pair of idiosyncratic bucket seats with striking side bolsters for extra lateral support. The back of the coupe is a 60/40 split rear bench that extends the cargo space. The feature is ideal for a weekend of skiing or to hold few odds and sods from the store. It has a more conventional parking-brake hand lever substituting the sedan’s foot-operated control.
Power is the other big difference between the models. The base car is equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that successfully generates 175 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to be amusing when mated to the six-speed manual box. A big part for the spirited drive is attributed to the transmission’s close ratios and a light, progressive clutch that puts the bite point in the precise place.

The suspension is firmer and the steering is also adequately weighted and responsive when turned off-centre. Apart from this, the coupe include the Nissan headlight bulb, a push-button start, the dual-zone climate control, cruise control and heated seats, power mirrors, windows and sunroof, a six-speaker audio system with an auxiliary plug-in, six air bags and standard anti-lock brakes that assures that this enticing model will provide an admirable driving experience on roads.

Drive-Throughs Come to the Ferris Wheel

Amusement parks are sick, but they are just not efficient, like you have to drive around to find a spot and park your car and then walk everywhere. I mean, they have figured out food and money with drive-throughs, man can drive on the moon, why can't they solve amusement parks? Wait- it seems that they have.

Dutch artist John Körmeling has built a 100 foot diameter wheel that can take four cars on a trip.

Never again will you have to stand in long lines in the sun; now you can relax in the comfort of your car with the air cranked up while you wait your turn.

Supercharged Lotus Evora On The Way With At least 350hp

This is just too good to pass up and not mention, Lotus makers of all things light and tossable, have already announced a variant for their upcoming, but not-out-to-the-public Evora 2+2.

Boasting an output of at least 350 horsepower, the Evora variant will use the same 3.5L Toyota-sourced V6 as the base model, only with a blower firmly attached. Torque will also be bumped up to nearly 300 lb-ft mark in production form. Given the cars already light weight, those figures should be enough to scoot the Evora SC to 60 in 5 seconds flat and boost the car’s terminal speed to 175 mph, according England’s to Autocar Magazine. Although it is expected to arrive on the market in May 2009, the super charged version is slated to arrive sometime in 2011.

Lotus is keeping busy with even more versions of the Evora after the jump.

In addition to the upcoming SC, Lotus is working on a more luxurious versions of the Evora aimed squarely at the higher end of its current list of high-profile clientele. Lotus is also working on an [shudder] automatic transmission for the Evora, largely due to strong demand in the U.S. [What the hell is wrong with you people?] The Lotus with the slush box (I can’t believe I’m writing that) will come well past the introduction of base Evora. “Right now, it’s looking unlikely that we’ll have the auto version next year,” a Lotus spokesman told Autocar. “There’s quite a lot of development work still to be done on it.” Let’s just pretend he didn’t say that and move on, shall we?

Wait, there’s STILL more versions of this car in the pipeline.

Lotus is working on a roadster version of the Evora. The drop-top Evora will sport a retractable metal hardtop, which, although adding weight, will not be overly heavy. Engineers at Lotus are working hard to ensure the unit doesn’t compromise the car’s overall handling. Expect the Evora roadster in showrooms in late 2010.

Headquartered in northeastern Indiana, Revenge Designs is run by president and CEO Peter Collorafi, a vehicle designer from Queensland, Australia, who has been designing and installing custom modifications for factory-produced vehicles since 1980, including the Revenge GTO that won best Exterior Design at the Spring 2007 SEMA expo.

Wind and solar powered car to burn the tarmac at 155mph

The Formula AE, with a prototype expected to come as early as August, could be a breakthrough in clean energy powered cars. Power will mainly come from paper-thin solar panels on the car, capable of fully charging the car in just 1.5 hours, the makers currently are looking at another battery prototype that will be fully charged in a seemingly impossible six minutes. A full charge will allow the vehicle to go 200 miles before the battery runs out.

Four air intakes, two at the front and one each on the sides, will channel the air towards a turbine, taking care of about 20 to 25 percent of the car’s electricity needs. Wind power acts as an auxiliary source of energy, ensuring the solar powered battery doesn’t drain out too fast. An alternating current induction motor will provide a mighty 212kW power to the car, allowing it to reach 155 mph top speed; with a zero to 60mph taking less than four seconds.

To keep the car light, the body and chassis have been built of lightweight aluminum and super strong steel, in a monocoque design. If the car makes it to production, it is likely to cost £100,000.

Top Gear's The Stig revealed as married man 'who drives boring car'

One of motor-racings most guarded secrets has been answered - Top Gear's The Stig has been unmasked as a married man in his 30s who lives in a £300,000 house with a boring £15,000 car.

Man behind the mask: The Stig is now known to be married and in his thirties, although the mysterious Top Gear character has not been named Photo: BBC / LEE BRIMBLE

Some say his tongue can strip the paint off a Porsche in 30 seconds, and that his first name really is 'The'.

Until now, all we knew was he was called The Stig.

But his secret identity appears now to have been leaked.

He is a married man, who lives in a comfortable £300,000 home and drives an unglamorous £15,000 car.

The racing star, who tests new cars and coaches celebrities in the Star in a Reasonably Price Car segment on the show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May has always kept his identity a closely-guarded secret.

The News Of The World discovered his true identity thanks to a leak in the BBC show.

Although not revealing his name, it gave some clues into the mysterious man's identity.

He found his first track outing when he was younger "terrifying" but this did not stop him from racing in Formula First, GT Racing and Stock Cars, while he almost made it to Formula One.

He is in his 30s, and earns around £150,000 a year combining his Top Gear job with some stunt and test driving.

A BBC source told the newspaper: "This is the best-kept secret in motor racing and we want to keep it that way.

"No one will ever officially confirm his identity."

It would appear the current version of The Stig has no intention of following in the footsteps of his predecessor Perry McCarthy.

McCarthy was The original Stig for 22 Top Gears but was "killed off" by being shot off the end of aircraft carrier HMS Invincible in a rocket-powered vehicle after revealing his secret.

Rolls Royce sold 1212 cars in 2008

Rolls Royce Motor Cars has seen its 2008 sales increase by 20 per cent. Last year the luxury car manufacturer retailed 1212 cars compared to 1010 the previous year. This marks the fifth consecutive annual sales increase since the company was launched in 2003.

There was strong demand across the Phantom range. However the continued popularity of the four-door versions was evident with the Phantom saloon and Extended Wheelbase models accounting for more than half of all sales. Continued interest in the Phantom Drophead Coupé and, in particular, the introduction of the Phantom Coupé in the summer of 2008 saw Rolls-Royce attract new buyers, boosting retails to record levels.

“This is a tremendous result and particularly gratifying considering the challenging economic environment manufacturers faced in the second half of 2008,” said Tom Purves, Chief Executive Officer. “Once again much of this success lies with the highly skilled and dedicated workforce that we have at Goodwood.”

North America remained the biggest single market for Rolls-Royce in 2008, accounting for 38 per cent of sales. Exceptional performances were seen in Northern Europe and in the Middle East which grew by around 95 and 48 per cent respectively. The Asia Pacific region saw continued sales growth in markets such as Australia, China, India and Singapore.

Looking ahead, preparations are now fully underway to ready the company for the introduction of a brand new model series, currently named RR4, due later this year.

Audi Sportback Concept pre-Detroit leaked images preview upcoming Audi A7 four-door coupe

First hi-res images of the Audi A7 Sportback Concept (the nameplate on the car seems to say Audi Sportback Concept) set to be displayed at the Detroit Auto Show tomorrow have been unveiled on the internet. The front-end looks alot like the ones shown on the Audi metroproject quattro and its evolution, the Audi A1 Sportback Concept, except the front grille loses the vertical slats, leaving only the horizontal ones.

It has a fastback roofline, more like the Porsche Panamera rather than the Aston Martin Rapide, which might lead some to think its going to have a hatchback boot, but a look an image of the rear after the jump and you can see the bootlid’s lines do not really meet the rear glass in a way that a hatch would, but then again Audi could also be doing a hatchback-sedan dual bootlid combo much like Skoda’s new Superb.

The Audi A7 is said to be larger than the Audi A6 and built on the new Audi MLP platform, which is modular in terms of length and width to suit different sizes of cars while retaining many components in the interests of economies of scale.

Toyota FT-EV

Toyota announced today that it will display the Toyota FT-EV concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, January 11 – 25, hinting that it might offer an urban all-electric commuter vehicle in the next few years. The FT-EV concept shares its platform with the company’s minicar, the Toyota iQ.

Toyota introduced the gas-version of the iQ in Japan in November 2008, and plans to roll out the minicar to Europe this month. Plans for North America are undetermined. The iQ is larger than the quintessential minicar, the Smart Fortwo, but not by much. Its wheelbase is a little more than five inches longer, and on the whole, the car is only about a foot longer than the Smart—11.4 inches to be exact. The iQ is a four-passenger vehicle while the Smart only carries two.

The electric version on display at the Detroit Auto Show, the Toyota FT-EV concept, offers driving range of 50 miles, according to Toyota.

“Last summer’s four-dollar-a-gallon gasoline was no anomaly. It was a brief glimpse of our future,” said Irv Miller, group vice president of environmental and public affairs at Toyota. The company is expected to dabble with pure electric and smaller vehicles like the iQ, but conventional gas-electric hybrids, like the Prius, are considered Toyota’s long-term core powertrain technology.

Last year, Toyota announced that it planned to sell one million gas-electric hybrids per year sometime during the early 2010s. To accomplish this, Toyota is expected to launch as many as 10 new hybrid models in the next few years. The company has not made any firm commitments to bring an electric car to market.

Lexus Enform will make cars speak and spam

Lexus is set to reach out to its customers, in a more personal way. Lexus vehicles this year will come installed with a new system called Lexus Insider, a part of the Enform gadget package. The system will be used to convey voice messages from the company to the vehicles, like tips and suggestions, but Lexus has decided to leave any marketing related messages out for now.

While the automaker sees the move as a means of delivering “highly targeted” messages, many analysts think its nothing more than “verbal spam.” These messages will be available once a user starts the engine, much like mails. Lexus says the system will be available only for drivers willing to participate, so it does not sound much like spam, but even in that case, the success for this system appears to be very, very difficult.

$25,000 electric car set for Australia

An electric car costing only $25,000 could be on sale in Australia within three years.

The world's leading hybrid car maker, Toyota, used the 2009 Detroit motor show to unveil the Toyota FT-EV, a concept car that previews a new battery-electric “urban commuter” vehicle set to go on sale in 2012.

US media is reporting the diminutive Toyota FT-EV electric car could wear an affordable price tag of about US$20,000 (about $25,000).

The FT-EV electric vehicle will see Toyota join the growing number of manufacturers who in the early years of the next decade will offer vehicles that run on electricity.

The FT-EV is based on Toyota’s iQ micro-car that landed in European and Japanese showrooms in 2008, though swaps that car’s 1.0-litre petrol engine for a 45kW electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

Toyota says the three-metre-long, four-seater FT-EV has a cruising range of 80km and a targeted top speed of 112km/h.

It takes between 2.5 and 7.5 hours to recharge the Toyota FT-EV electric car, depending on the voltage of the power supply.

Toyota says the FT-EV will broaden its range of alternative-fuel vehicles as the world faces dwindling oil supplies, and will be aimed at city residents who would use the battery-electric car to commute between home and work, or to drive to other forms of public transport such as railway stations.

“Last year’s [2008's] spike in the price of petrol was no anomaly,” says Toyota Motor Sales group vice president, environmental and public affairs, Irv Miller.

“It was a brief glimpse of our future. We must address the inevitability of peak oil [when the world’s oil supply starts a permanent decline] by developing vehicles powered by alternatives to liquid-oil fuel, as well as new concepts, like the iQ, that are lighter in weight and smaller in size. This kind of vehicle, electrified or not, is where our industry must focus its creativity.”

Toyota FT EVToyota FT EVToyota FT EV concept car from 2009 Detroit motor show

Toyota says its petrol-electric hybrid vehicles – such as the third-generation Toyota Prius hybrid car also revealed at the 2009 Detroit motor show – will continue to be at the centre of the company’s long-term sustainable motoring program.

Toyota will introduce 10 new petrol-electric hybrid models by the early 2010s in various markets as it targets one-million hybrid sales per year.

Toyota also used the Detroit show to announce it was fast-forwarding its plug-in hybrid program from 2010 to 2009.

Towards the end of 2009, Toyota will deliver 500 Prius plug-in hybrids to global fleet-lease customers as part of a mass-production feasibility study.

The Prius plug-in hybrid (PHV) is different to the petrol-electric Prius that has become the world’s best-selling hybrid. The Prius PHV can only recharge its lithium-ion battery pack through a power outlet, whereas the current Prius recharges its nickel-metal hydride battery via its 1.5-litre petrol engine.

The FT-EV won’t be the first electric Toyota to go into production. The company sold an all-electric version of the RAV4 softroader in the US between 1997 and 2003.

Toyota reveals iQ-based FT-EV Concept

Toyota has announced that it will display its new FT-EV concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, while also confirming that it will launch an urban commuter ‘battery-electric vehicle’ (BEV) by 2012. The carmaker also revealed that it will start consumer trials of a fleet of 150 plug-in hybrids towards the end of this year and launch as many as ten new petrol-electric hybrid vehicles next year.

This announcement, coupled with its compressed natural gas powered Camry Hybrid concept display at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, signal Toyota's intention to broaden the scope of its advanced alternative-fuel vehicle development.

The all-electric FT-EV concept shares its platform with the iQ urban commuter vehicle, and can drive up to 50 miles on a single charge.

Although BEVs and new smaller vehicles like the iQ will be a key component of Toyota's sustainable mobility strategy, the conventional gas-electric hybrid, like the all new third-generation Prius, also set for this month’s Detroit event, is considered Toyota's long-term core powertrain technology. Additionally, Toyota plans to showcase a brand new Lexus dedicated hybrid called the HS250h.

Towards the end of the year, Toyota will start global delivery of 500 Prius plug-in hybrids powered by lithium-ion batteries. Of these initial vehicles, 150 will be placed with U.S. lease-fleet customers. The cars will be used for market and engineering analysis. Lease–fleet customers will monitor the performance and durability of the first-generation lithium-ion battery, while offering real world feedback on how future customers might respond to the plug-in process.

Used Ford Explorer - A Lot of Car For Your Money

With the current high cost of fuel, the gloomy economic future not to mention the whole global warming thing a used 4×4 might not be uppermost on your mind right now. The good news however is if for whatever reason you were thinking of buying one there are some absolute bargains to be had out there in the somewhat depressed world of the used 4×4.

When Ford introduced the Explorer to the UK in 1997 it must have been pretty confident that it would secure healthy sales. Not only was the car the world’s bestselling 4×4 at the time but the market for luxury SUVs was positively booming especially in the UK.

However, some UK buyers were put off by the £25,000 price tag and rather heavy fuel consumption and as a result sales were rather disappointing to the extent that just four years later Ford stopped selling the Explorer in Britain.

A few years on and the demand for 4×4s has plummeted, but if you are in the market for a large luxurious vehicle then a used Ford Explorer has much to commend it.

The Explorer was only available with one engine, a 4 litre V6 petrol unit producing a hefty 208hp which was more than enough to power the 2,000kg vehicle from 0-60mph in less than 10seconds and on to a top speed of 100mph. The slight downside to that is that it does less than 20mpg which is not terribly encouraging.

The Explorer’s main market has traditionally been America which again until recently would not have been the slightest bit bothered by such a thirst for fuel. As a result the US influenced styling is fairly evident in the round front end and generous seats. Rear legroom is on the tight side if the front seats are pushed right back but there is no shortage of shoulder room thanks to the vehicle’s 6ft 5in width.

In terms of load carrying the Explorer is pretty hard to beat. There is a useful split rear tailgate that opens separately, similar to that on the Range Rover, which makes loading and unloading easy, and there’s also a step built into the rear bumper that makes lifting luggage onto the roof bars fairly straightforward.

With a towing capacity of more than 2,500kg it will easily handle a standard caravan, trailer or horse box. Boot space is generous, and although the high ground clearance can make the leap a bit challenging for small or old dogs the optional rear dog guard is ideal for keeping man’s best friend safely contained. American buyers always demand a high level of standard equipment on their cars and UK buyers benefit from this. All models come with air-conditioning, cruise control, twin airbags, factory sunroof and remote central locking as standard and the XLT model has the addition of leather upholstery and heated front seats with electric adjustment.

On road the Ford Explorer is a surprisingly decent drive, and despite its size and weight generates fairly minimal body roll. The slightly dated rear leaf springs soak up bumps quite well and the robust traditional chassis gives the vehicle a strong feel, while nicely weighted power steering gives a reassuring drive. Off road, Ford’s “Control Trac” 4×4 system, switches automatically from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive as required, while a dash mounted switch allows you to select between high and low gear ratios when conditions require it.

With used prices now being so good the Ford Explorer is certainly a bargain alternative to the usual contenders from Mitsubishi, Land Rover and Jeep cars, but as with all older cars you will need to check the vehicle over carefully.

Spare parts are still easy to find at Ford dealers but they can be expensive, for example front wishbone ball joints are not cheap to replace, and be wary of dirty oil, which can often signal a block in the oil feed on the timing chain tensioner. Repairing this will result in a large bill. As with all older vehicles, items such as air-conditioning and electric seat motors need to be checked for performance.

The Ford Explorer may have received a lukewarm reception from British buyers when it was first launched but if you are looking for a big, comfortable, reasonably priced and well equipped 4×4 it certainly deserves a second look.

Who needs a hybrid?

Green is for sale. But who’s buying? Seriously, who needs a hybrid? Without question, fuel-saving technology is essential both for automakers who hope to compete in the next decade and for a nation stricken by energy problems. But if you dig through the sales numbers over the past few months, it’s easy to see that more consumers are asking whether the extra cost of a hybrid-electric car is really worth it.

In December, sales of Toyota’s Prius—the standard bearer of all hybrids—fell by a whopping 45%. In November, sales were off 48%. During those two months, gasoline prices plummeted below $2 a gallon. This proves that America hasn’t turned truly green. More likely, they turned red at the pump back in July when gasoline prices topped $4 a gallon. People fled their suvs and bought smaller cars and hybrids like there was a fuel shortage.

But once gasoline prices fell back to levels that Americans have normally paid, they pulled back on hybrid purchases. Toyota has indefinitely delayed its plans for a Prius plant in Mississippi. Toyota isn’t the only company feeling a pinch. Ford’s Escape hybrid and the competing Saturn Vue hybrid both saw sales sink by more than 40% last month. And the hybrid Civic? Off almost 70%. Ouch.

Jim Lentz, President of Toyota Motor Sales USA, notes that for the year, hybrid sales fell only 12%. That shows better staying power than a car market that fell 18%. His point shouldn’t be ignored. He is also right when he says that in the long run, gasoline prices will rise and hybrids will be a better sell. Plus, he says, 80% of Prius owners trade in for a new one. That means the existing buyers keep coming back.

But annual numbers are padded by the huge fuel-price spike of the first half of the year. Recent months show that when gas prices fall, consumers aren’t buying. This creates a huge dilemma for car companies and policy makers. New fuel economy rules will mandate fuel-saving technology. Carmakers the world over are pushing hybrids and other fuel savers to market. But without a hit to the wallet, Americans still aren’t sold on them. Without a price spike—or a tax on gasoline—carmakers will once again be caught between a policy that demands fuel economy and an American consumer who remains indifferent.

Nissan GT-R - the new pace car for V8 Supercars

In a move that is certain to bring some irony to the sport, Nissan’s iconic GT-R is coming back to the V8 Supercar series.

Why irony? Well, for those of you old enough to remember, the GT-R simply flogged the home made metal years ago, leading to the infamous “pack of arseholes” quote from Gentleman Jim Richards - not so gentlemanly at the time, though.
Click here if you want to know what we’re on about.

This time, however, the GT-R won’t be racing - although a few of us would like to see how competitive it would be.
The GT-R will be the new V8 Supercar Pace Car for the 2009 series. The reason? Well according to Nissan spokesperson Jeff Fisher, GT-R could use the exposure.
Mr Fisher has said, “We’re looking at numerous ways of giving GT-R continued exposure over the life of the vehicle. The V8 Supercar program could be an appealing way to do that.”

Bling Alert! Phantom painted in gold

When a Rolls Royce isn’t enough to display wealth, people may decide to go for a blasphemous modification, or as in this case, an ugly paint job. A certain someone with a Phantom in the garage and money to launder, decided to give the car a gold paint sweeping all over the car, from hood to boot. A plain Rolls Royce looks much more dignified and decent. As for this one, it’s vulgar.
