The sleek 328 roadster built in 1940 not only makes reminiscences of BMW’s golden past alive but also helps auto freaks fathom brand’s deep roots in the auto history. To mark the occasion of its victory in Mille Miglia 70 years ago, BMW is unveiling a 328 Mille Miglia Concept Coupé at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010 on the weekend of the 23rd of April.

Coveted for its beauty and rarity, BMW’s 328 coupe was built especially to race in the 1940 Mille Miglia with peculiar attention from its designer Wilhelm Mayrhofer to make it lightweight and aerodynamic body welded to the tube frame that allows the engine and drivetrain sit lower for a better center of gravity.

The five Mille Miglia cars with a unique place in BMW’s history featured an advanced tube frame chassis, independent front suspension and a 2.0-liter inline-6 producing 80 horsepower. Well, it may not sound too impressive if we think about the modern day cars, but 328 weighed just 1830 pounds and could top 100 mph.

The one pictured above was paralyzed after an accident in the early 1950s and is debuting after an extensive restoration that started in the mid 90s.
