2009 Nissan Murano pricing and specs
It boasts an evolutionary design over the original Murano launched five years ago, which Nissan claim spawned the cross over genre.
Local models will receive a more powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine which develops 191kW of power and 336Nm at 4400rpm.
On the combined cycle, the new Murano uses 10.9 litres of petrol per 100kms while producing 259 grams per 100kms of CO2.
“The basic engine architecture hasn’t changed, but attention to fine detail has helped develop an engine that not only delivers more power, but does so using less fuel and producing fewer emissions.” says Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Managing Director and CEO, Dan Thompson.
The engine is mated to a revised six-speed Xtronic CVT gearbox which has been optimised for quicker and more intuitive shifts.
Power is transferred to the ground through an intelligent all mode four-wheel-drive system with electronic 4WD selection and lock mode, including Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Active Brake limited Slip and Traction Control System (TCS).
Standard features include push button start, double stitched leather seat trim, leather steering wheel and gear knob, dual zone climate control, cruise control, six-stacker stereo system with MP3 auxiliary input and six speakers plus steering wheel audio controls.
The flagship Ti variant adds front heated seats, a BOSE audio system with 11 speakers including two subwoofers, satellite navigation, reverse parking camera and hands free Bluetooth phone system.
The new Nissan Murano arrives in Australia priced at $45,990 for the ST model and $55,890 for the Ti model.

Nissan GT-R - the new pace car for V8 Supercars
Why irony? Well, for those of you old enough to remember, the GT-R simply flogged the home made metal years ago, leading to the infamous “pack of arseholes” quote from Gentleman Jim Richards - not so gentlemanly at the time, though.
Click here if you want to know what we’re on about.
This time, however, the GT-R won’t be racing - although a few of us would like to see how competitive it would be.
The GT-R will be the new V8 Supercar Pace Car for the 2009 series. The reason? Well according to Nissan spokesperson Jeff Fisher, GT-R could use the exposure.
Mr Fisher has said, “We’re looking at numerous ways of giving GT-R continued exposure over the life of the vehicle. The V8 Supercar program could be an appealing way to do that.”

Power Enterprise quad-charges the Nissan GT-R
Power Enterprise's approach to modifying the Nissan GT-R follows the tried and true approach of tuning the ECU, adding sticky tires and putting a little color under the hood, but then it goes into relatively uncharted territory. The idea of turbo-supercharging a car isn't itself new - even a few production cars feature the solution. Twin-turbo and twin-supercharging, however is several orders of magnitude less common.
With a pair of Rotrex C30-94 superchargers bolted to the engine and new fuel injectors to flow the necessary fuel, Power Enterprise says the car will feature better low-end and mid-range response, plus more torque. Exactly how much more torque or horsepower is generated depends on the kit. One kit offers 560hp (418kW) as a bolt-on to a stock GT-R, another offers 600hp (448kW).
The final car will be revealed in its entirety at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January.

Report Says GM Shopping For-Sale Assets in China; GM Denies It
A spokesman for Dongfeng, which partners in China with Nissan, Honda and PSA Peugeot Citroen, said it had received e-mails and investment materials asking if the company would be interested in buying some of GM's assets. The spokesman, who wouldn't reveal the investment banks it was talking with or the assets offered for purchase, told Bloomberg it hasn't reviewed the materials and has not responded to GM.
A GM spokesman based in Shanghai denied the report, saying there were no grounds to the rumors.
Still, it comes as no surprise that GM would go to foreign companies, especially those in emerging markets like China, to offer its wares. GM has assets to sell and the Chinese have access to cash. And Ford was successful in selling off its distressed assets of Land Rover and Jaguar to India's Tata Motors.
GM has put a number of assets up for sale including Hummer and AC Delco. So far, GM has found no takers. A deal to sell its medium-duty commercial truck business to Navistar fell apart as the economy worsened. Further, in its viability plan submitted to Congress on Tuesday, GM said it was considering "options" for Saab and Saturn as well. Saab could be sold; Saturn likely would be dismantled or its vehicles folded into other GM divisions.
Chinese companies are likely targets as buyers for GM's assets since they have access to capital and ambitious global expansion plans with sites set on North America in particular. A Shanghai analyst told Bloomberg capital for overseas investment is not a problem for Chinese companies, though other possible risks include issues regarding local legal regulations and labor unions.
More than likely, GM also has talked to its own Chinese partner, SAIC Corp., China's largest automaker. SAIC already has expanded into Europe with the purchase of design rights to MG Rover and South Korea with its stake in Ssangyong Motor Co.
And interestingly, the Chinese government in November opened a consulate office in the Detroit suburbs of Troy, Michigan, the home to SAIC's offices.

Gas Prices and Heavy Incentives Keep Car Sales From Sinking Below October's Depths
November new vehicle sales, including fleet and retail sales, are expected to be 850,000 units, a 27.6 percent decrease from November 2007 but showing a 1.9- percent increase from last month, according to Edmunds.com's forecast.
Still, the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) for the month is expected to be only about 11.5 million units.
"Sales improved slightly over October thanks to near record high incentives and perhaps a sense of relief that the presidential election is over," observed Jesse Toprak, executive director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "Also, remarkably low gas prices motivated shoppers to seriously consider the tremendous deals available on SUVs and trucks."
The combined monthly U.S. market share for Chrysler, Ford and General Motors domestic nameplates is estimated to be 47.1 percent in November 2008, down from 51.1 percent in November 2007 and up slightly from 47.0 percent in October.
The domestic automakers are in the midst of scrambling to develop a viability proposal in order to earn government loans, making it more important than ever for them to demonstrate that their products are appealing to the American public.
Company by company, Edmunds.com predicts:
Chrysler will sell 94,000 units in November, down 41.7 percent compared to November 2007 and down 0.3 percent from October. This would result in a new car market share of 11 percent for Chrysler in November, down from 13.7 percent in November 2007 and down from 11.3 percent in October.
Ford will sell 119,000 units in November, down 33.1 percent compared to November 2007 and down 7.8 percent from October. This would result in a new car market share of 14 percent of new car sales in November for Ford, down from 15.1 percent in November 2007 and down from 15.5 percent in October 2008.
General Motors will sell 188,000 units in November, down 28.2 percent compared to November 2007 and up 11.2 percent from October. GM's market share is expected to be 22.1 percent of new vehicle sales in November, down slightly from 22.3 percent in November 2007 and up from 20.3 percent in October.
Honda will sell 88,000 units in November, down 20.6 percent from November 2007 and up 3 percent from October. Honda's market share is expected to be 10.4 percent in November 2008, up from 9.5 percent in November 2007 and up from 10.3 percent in October.
Nissan will sell 57,000 units in November, down 29.3 percent from November 2007 and up 0.2 percent from October. Nissan's market share is expected to be 6.7 percent in November 2008, down from 6.9 percent in November 2007 and down from 6.8 percent in October.
Toyota will sell 150,000 units in November, down 24.2 percent from November 2007 and down 1.7 percent from October. Toyota's market share is expected to be 17.6 percent in November, up from 16.8 percent in November 2007 and down from 18.2 percent in October.

2009 Nissan GT-R Series II upgrade rumours
The official announcement is expected to be made by Nissan on December 8, with the most crucial change being a price jump of 10 percent - exceeding earlier reports that there would be a 5 percent premium for MY09 models.
Engine output is expected to rise, albeit conservatively by about 4kW and the Brembo brake callipers will be rebadged to Nissan with stiffer brake hoses.
The fuel tank capacity will be increased by 2.8 litres while fuel economy has been slightly improved.
Other changes include a slight revision to the GT-R’s colour palette, opting for the new Brilliant White Pearl over the existing Ivory Pearl White which it will share with the 370Z.
Ultimate Silver will also attract a price premium, up AUD$840 to AUD$5,880 in Japan.
The wheel colour has also been slightly revised, although the extent of these changes is not yet known.
Finally, the Black edition will now be fitted with Dunlop tyres as standard with the Bridgestone tyres becoming an option.
Unconfirmed changes suggest JDM models will receive upgrades from their overseas counterparts such as European specification suspension and iPod connectivity from the US version.
The GPS-activated speed limiter will also be updated to include more locations across Japan.

2009 Nissan 370Z US specs leaked
The new Nissan Z Coupe is set to go on sale in the US from January 2009 from a base price of $30,000, followed by the Z Roadster in 2010.
Almost every part of the new Nissan Z has been redesigned, resulting in a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, a new engine with more horsepower and improved fuel economy.
The 370Z is smaller than its predecessor in every direction to help reduce weight, coupled with the expanded use of aluminium for the door panels and hood.
The net result is a saving of around 45kg over the comparative 350Z model with rear body torsion rigidity improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity improved by up to 30 percent.
“As every race car driver knows, weight is the enemy of performance and rigidity is the foundation for handling – but they usually work at cross purposes from each other,” said Castignetti. “With the new 370Z, the engineers were able to build a body that is both stronger and lighter, enhancing Z’s athletic performance abilities.”The exterior design intentionally incorporates 240Z styling cues, with a dramatic cantilevered roof gathering its inspiration from the Nissan GT-R.
The drag coefficient is just 0.30, which drops to 0.29 with the Sport Package - the same as the previous 350Z model. The new Z also maintains the previous generation’s zero front lift and zero rear lift when equipped with the rear spoiler, thanks to extensive aerodynamics efforts.
The distinctive ‘boomerang’ shaped head lamps and tail lights incorporate High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are standard.
The 370Z is a true two-seat sports coupe, with an open cargo area for enhanced storage and accessibility in the rear.
The 370Z Touring model adds 4-way power adjustable heated leather sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, 6CD Bose audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, Bluetooth system and passenger seat map pocket.
The new-generation 3.7-litre VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) is rated at 247kW and 365NM at 5,200 rpm - almost a 20kW improvement over the previous model.
The larger capacity engine yields better power delivery all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline with improved low end power and more high-end torque.
The new engine is backed by a choice of two new advanced transmissions: a 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic.
The close-ratio six-speed manual includes the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system, which automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially “blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts.
This function improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical “shock” when the clutch is engaged, although driver’s who prefer less vehicle intervention can deactivate the system completely with a button next to the shifter.
“The SynchroRev Match system takes nothing away from the driver – you still have to engage the clutch and move the shifter – it just gives you a performance edge by smoothing out the gear engagement,” said Castignetti. The new 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts.
Fuel economy is identical for either transmission, using 13.0l/100kms in city driving, and 9.0l/100kms on the highway - which is a slight increase over the previous Z car.
The double-wishbone front suspension (replacing the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses lighter forged aluminium arms and a lightweight rigid aluminium-alloy cradle, along with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio.
The standard 370Z wheel and tyre package features 18-inch staggered 5spoke lightweight aluminium-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear Yokohama ADVAN Sport maximum performance rubber.
An optional sport package adds 19-inch RAYS forged lightweight aluminium-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A P245/40R19 front/P275/35R19 tires.
The braking system has been upgraded to improve overall feel and brake fade resistance with 4-piston front callipers and 2-piston rears biting onto vented discs.
The new 2009 370Z’s model line-up has been greatly simplified, versus the 2008 350Z, with just two models – 370Z and the 370Z Touring.
Nissan Halves Amount of Precious Metals Used as Purification Catalysts
The new catalyst will be introduced in the new Cube compact car, which will be announced Nov 19, 2008. The amount of precious metals used for the underfloor catalyst in the new Cube has been reduced from 1.3 to 0.65g. Still, the emission level of the new Cube is 75% lower than the 2005 exhaust emission standards in Japan, and the car has been qualified as a "Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SU-LEV)."
Of the precious metals used throughout the world, the percentage of platinum (Pt) used for automotive applications accounts for about 50%, while that of rhodium (Rh) is about 80%. In view of the limited amount of precious metals that can be mined and their rising prices, it is crucial to reduce the amount those metals used in vehicles.
In the existing catalysts, precious metals such as Pt cluster due to heat generated while the car is running (Fig 2). This reduces the surface area exposed to exhaust gas, hence impairing the purification performance. Therefore, the amount of precious metals had to be determined in such a way that the performance degradation may be compensated with the additional amount of precious metals.
On the other hand, in Nissan's ultra-low precious metal catalyst, physical partitions are provided around the substrate to avoid the reduction of surface area exposed to exhaust gas, which is caused by precious metal aggregation (Fig 2). This technique is applicable to Pt, Rh and Palladium (Pd) used as catalysts.
The ultra-low precious metal catalyst will be produced in Nissan's Yokohama Plant. The company plans to gradually expand the adoption of the catalyst in compact cars for the Japanese market, while considering the introduction in other types of vehicles and the sales in non-automotive sectors.
Nissan developed this technology in collaboration with Renault SAS of France and plans to introduce it in Renault vehicles in the future.

Nissan 370Z - the first real pictures
But, rumors say that this Nissan 370Z will be equipped with a V6 engine of 3.7 liters, coupled to a manual gearbox in 6 steps or an automatic one. I guess we’ll live and see.
Nissan Versa to become Canada's least expensive car
The repositioned Versa Sedan gets a 1.6 litre engine, rather than the 1.8 litre unit found in the hatchback model.
"Starting at $12,498, this new Versa 1.6 Sedan has the lowest MSRP in Canada, by more than $700, and is more than $1,000 lower than any 4dr Sedan." said Jeff Parent, V.P. of Sales and Marketing at Nissan Canada. "But a low price is really only half the news. Nissan Canada is bringing in a full range of Versa 1.6 sedans including a base vehicle and a Value Option Package model that is unique to Canada."
The Value Option Package adds air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors and remote keyless entry. The sedan is also equipped with six standard airbags, including side-curtains.
"The Versa is Nissan's best selling product in Canada," added Parent, "The launch of this Versa 1.6 Sedan shows how Nissan is working to bring value and choice to Canadians consumers in the entry-level market place."
The Versa 1.6 Sedan goes on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide beginning December 1st.
New Nissan Cube to debut new catalyst with low precious metal content
Between 30% to 50% of the world’s platinum output is used in automobile catalytic converters, and automobile-based usage are set to become even higher of fuel cell cars become more popular in the future, as platinum catalysts are also used in fuel cells.
Platinum is called a precious metal for a reason. Some keywords found in the definition of a precious metal include rare, and high in economic value. Thus it would make sense for an automaker to try to reduce the usage of such precious metals in their vehicles.
Nissan has developed a new ultra-low precious metal catalyst that will debut on the new Nissan Cube, set to be launched this week on the 19th of November 2008. They claim it uses half the amount of precious metals (rhodium and platinum) compared with regular catalysts - 1.3 grams versus 0.65 grams.
In regular catalysts, the high exhaust gas temperatures cause the precious metals to cluster together, thus reducing exposed metal surface. To counter this, catalysts typically contain more precious metals. Nissan’s catalyst adds a “wall” which prevents the clustering of the precious metals.

Nissan may be best partner for Chrysler
"Nissan is relatively strong in small cars, and Chrysler is strong with bigger vehicles. It would be more of a dovetailing of product portfolios between those two companies," said Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis at the Power Network at J.D. Power and Associates.
"Chrysler already has a relationship with Nissan, so that provides a potential for a reasonable fit. Whatever is done, though, it would have to be accompanied by a substantial cash war chest because all automakers are burning up an unbelievable amount of cash each month," said Jack Nerad, editorial director of Kelley Blue Book.
Under a current agreement, Nissan is to provide Chrysler with a new car for limited distribution in South America next year, and in 2010 Nissan is to provide a new fuel-efficient car based on a Chrysler concept and design to be sold in North America, Europe and other markets. For its part, Chrysler is to build a full-size pickup for Nissan, based on a Nissan design, to be built in Mexico. Sales of that truck are set begin in 2011.
Though Nissan officials confirmed last summer that they were talking to Chrysler about expanding their partnership, Renault Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said recently that "deals involving cash won't happen" during the economic slump unless the car companies "have access to a big pot of cash coming from the government."
Nissan is having its own financial problems. It slashed its full-year profit forecast by over half last month because of the dismal global car market.
"Both Nissan and Renault [which owns Nissan] are in a tough position and they're eating up cash," said Koji Endo, a Tokyo-based analyst at Credit Suisse. "It's not wise to do anything with the Big Three while their fate is still unclear."
Renault's share value has plummeted 77 percent this year and Nissan's has dropped 66 percent.
Nissan may not be Chrylser's only hope. While GM CEO Rick Wagoner said last week that the efforts toward acquisition of Chrysler have "been set aside," it does not mean that talks won't start up again.
"The talks have been called off, but not for the long term," said Mr. Libby. "They've just been called off for now. Our position is that there would be some benefits to a merger, but there would definitely be some challenges for what it would have created."
Those challenges include grappling with product and brand overlap and how to integrate the dealer networks.
Peter Morici, a University of Maryland business professor who tracks the auto industry, said there was another road that Chrysler could take.
"Chrysler ought to just go ahead and jump through Chapter 11 right now, and emerge as a smaller, leaner company -- and then sell themselves," he said.

Ten Cars That Looked Better Before Their Makeovers

LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
Last Generation: 2003 - 2006
Current Generation: 2007 - Present
It's no secret that the chrome-happy electric razor schnoz of the Navigator has not made friends within the automotive media. The simpler, more polished look of the previous Navigator wasn’t subtle, but it was a great deal classier on a vehicle that was one of the pioneers of the full-size luxury SUV segment.

BMW 5-SERIES
Last Generation: 1996 - 2003
Current Generation: 2004 - Present
When Chris Bangle took his designer's pen to the 5-Series for 2004, it stirred a lot of mixed emotions amongst the automotive media, with some outlets even proclaiming it as the ugliest 5-Series ever made. Many of Bangle’s design cues (first seen in the 7-Series) have been showing up in other brands, however, so perhaps he’s having the last laugh. Still, as the 1996-2003 was one of the most balanced sedan designs we’ve yet seen, we’re not buying any of it.

INFINITI FX
Last Generation: 2003 - 2008
Current Generation: 2009
The former FX was a bold statement for Infiniti: a crossover vehicle skewed toward high performance and high art at the expense of outright functionality. The new FX still carries that theme, but the new front end’s contrived grille and awkward headlamps has lost the clean look that made the first FX so popular.

DODGE VIPER
Last Generation: 1996 - 2002
Current Generation: 2008 - Present
We know, we know, we technically skipped a generation, but the styling of that particular model was hardly changed when the 2008 Viper made its debut. Although it's a bit hard to tell in pictures, older models were more aggressive and less bulbous. Although still attractive, the new Viper's styling is a bit too soft and rounded-- it simply doesn't look as raw or cutthroat as its predecessor.

SAAB 9-5
Last Generation: 1997 - 2005
Current Generation: 2006 - Present
While the original Saab 9-5 was a simple case of evolutionary design, the current 9-5 looks like a bad bit of rhinoplasty has been grafted onto an older car (which it has). The chrome surrounds on the headlamps and the grille look out of place, and the front overhang looks far more pronounced than its predecessor, giving the 9-5 an oddly nose-heavy look.

CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE
Last Generation: 2004 - 2007
Current Generation: 2008 - Present
While we wouldn't hand out any design awards to the last-generation Chrysler Sebring Convertible, the current model's front and rear ends look like they were designed in two completely different rooms. The 2004-2007 iteration may have been less imaginative, but it looked more balanced. While the sedan bodystyle won’t win any awards, the big raspberry is reserved for the convertible model, whose lengthy rear proportions and awkward trunk lid shut-line make it look like a quasi-pickup from some angles.

NISSAN MURANO
Last Generation: 2003 - 2007
Current Generation: 2008 - Present
Among the NextAutos staff, putting the Murano on this list was a really tough sell for at least a couple of us. Still, the detractors won out, claiming that the first-generation Murano's shape was boldly rounded and wholly original, while the styling of the new Murano seems overwrought, especially in the headlight/grille area.

ACURA TL
Last Generation: 2004 - 2008
Current Generation: 2009
A lot of controversy has been stirred over the contrasting chevron grille that Acura has put on most of its new models, and while the last-gen TL wasn't necessarily a huge step forward in sporty expression, we prefer its cleaner lines and less-contrived aesthetic.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA
Last Generation: 1999 - 2004
Current Generation: 2005 - Present
While the last-generation Jetta’s simple forms, clean bodysides and rounded wheel arches screamed class-above European refinement, the current Jetta was a step in the wrong direction. The chrome grille, larger proportions, and bloated design even strikes us as a bit derivative-Japanese from certain vantage points.

SCION xB
Last Generation: 2004 - 2007
Current Generation: 2008 - Present
The original Scion xB had an iconic cubist design that really helped kickstart the Scion brand in America. But when the new, bubbly, bulgy, blind-spotty xB debuted for 2008, Scion started to lose sales traction in the U.S., while resale value on the original xBox continues to be the stuff of owner dreams. Coincidence?
Most of the time, when an automaker completely overhauls one of their models, it's a good step forward for not only the car, but for the brand it represents. However, there are other times where the design teams make some questionable decisions and the new products end up looking worse than their predecessors.
Thus, we present our list of ten cars that, from a design standpoint, we think looked better in their previous generation. Scroll through our gallery to see all of the contenders, and leave a comment with any cars that you think we may have missed, and/or maligned.

Nissan Makes Versa the Cheapest Car in the U.S. at $9990

Nissan has just announced a new version of its entry level Versa sedan today, along with an MSRP that will make that car the lowest priced in the country—$9990 before destination and handling ($10,685 after).
The new base model Versa replaces the standard 1.8-liter four with a 1.6-liter unit, an engine that produces 107 horsepower and can deliver 34 miles per gallon on the highway (26 city) when paired with the standard five-speed manual transmission. The optional four-speed automatic delivers a slightly lower 26/33 mpg rating.
As you might expect, Nissan has decontented the Versa somewhat to be able to hit that magical four-digit price tag, though the company has yet to detail what, exactly, will come standard on the least expensive car in the U.S. The company does boast that Versa now combines “the low price of a used car with the dependability, high quality and full factory warranty of every new Nissan.” A powerful argument in difficult financial times. The new Versa focuses squarely on value and fuel economy, with its standard 107-horsepower DOHC 16-valve 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine delivering responsive performance and a 34 mpg highway fuel economy rating (with the 5-speed manual transmission).
